A postpartum magic

When your husband
tells you that your
body is still beautiful,
even more
because of how you sacrificed yourself
for the bundle of blankets laying
and laughing between you on your bed,

do not cut him off, do not chop down
his words. He is not a cherry tree,

                        or a maple tree,

or any kind of tree.
Your husband
says the stretchmark scars
            on your thighs are magical,
doesn’t wish them away like you do
when you’re rubbing
            miracle creams on your skin.
They are tally marks of how many leg cramps
you suffered during the pregnancy,
how many times you
worried that you
wouldn’t be a good mother,
they are the reason you resent your mother’s body.
Not your mother’s body,
as in belonging to your maternal
                                    root system
but you,
as a mother,
            your body.

Swimsuit season is yoga pants and jeans
that barely fit the width
                        of your new hips,
constantly pulling down your shirt to cover
            the small of your back like a well-kept secret;
trying to contain your swollen breasts
when they no longer fit into any of your clothing
without piquing provocation;
                        a second puberty.
They tell you,
you will adjust to this new body
      but some days,
it’s not a matter of
it’s a matter of coming to terms
with the transformation;
            relating to the caterpillar,
                        once one shape,
now defined butterfly;
thick hourglass.

It’s a reminder of how your children
clung inside you, let you
become their safe haven for a moment,
and your husband’s voice calling
you magic.
